Rainy Day At The Big Lonely Doug | Unceded Territory of Pacheedaht First Nation

Big Lonely Doug is a Douglas-fir tree within the Pacheedaht territory of Vancouver Island, Canada. It is one of the last old-growth trees in the area, and stands at around 800 years old. It has been a source of inspiration for many, drawing in people from all walks of life to marvel at its size and beauty. Despite its age and grandeur, Big Lonely Doug is not supported by a healthy surrounding forest, as the area has been heavily logged.

The coastal rainforest surrounding Big Lonely Doug is a complex, interconnected ecosystem that requires the presence of many different species of trees, and the current lack of a forest structure cannot provide adequate protection. This lack of ecosystem diversity also results in less water retention and higher levels of erosion. This makes the tree more susceptible to damage from extreme weather, such as high winds and heavy rain.

Big Lonely Doug serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of protecting our forests. It is up to us to safeguard our forests and ensure that the trees that remain are able to live out their full lives, so that future generations can enjoy their beauty and grandeur. By working together to protect our old growth forests, we can help to ensure that ancient trees like the Big Lonely Doug remains standing for many more centuries to come.
