HARPOON ROCK

Harpoon Rock | Traditional Territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən People

According to the Songhees' story of Harpoon Rock, Hayls, the Transformer, arrived in his canoe along with his spirit companions, Mink and Raven. As they approached the rock, they noticed a harpooner who was stalking a seal. Hayls and his companions frightened the seal away, which angered the harpooner.

The harpooner rebuked them, but Hayls, who possessed great powers, turned the harpooner into stone as punishment for his disrespect. From that day on, the harpooner was tasked with protecting the seals on the point forever.

This story has been passed down through generations and serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting nature and its inhabitants.
